Similar to Ostara, the ritual at Mabon focuses on the investiture of the Holly King. It is time for the Oak King to step down and enjoy his well earned rest and for the Holly Prince to rise up to kinghood.
Unlike Ostara, there are no challenges from the court for the Holly Prince. For he was chosen and challenged already. He was our Oak King of the year past, who, having rested, now takes up his brother’s role and will rule the Winter Court through the dark half of the year.
The court comes instead to Witness the changing of the Kings, and thus honour the changing of the seasons. In celebration, we shall hold games and a feast, a bardic and the Wild Hunt. For with the coming of Winter come the darkness and the wildness within the world and within each of us.
